FX Alien TV series is a reimagining of the franchise, will be separate from Alien: Romulus movie

Noah Hawley’s Alien TV series for FX has begun filming in Thailand this month. The series aims to reimagine the Alien franchise, according to FX chairman John Landgraf who was recently quoted by Deadline at TCA 2024 saying the following:

[Alien] is big imaginative reimagining of that franchise. It was really fun to watch [Noah] take on the Alien franchise in the way I watched him take on Fargo, to try to figure out how to deconstruct where the magic of it comes from and what were the key ingredients and how he can deliver those ingredients in a different way without just repeating things that have been done before.

He further went on to add that the Alien show is designed to be an ongoing series:

It’s designed to be an ongoing series. Then as far as Fargo goes, it’s a matter of timing because I’m hoping Noah’s going to be working subsequent seasons of Alien and really try to turn that around fast.

Noah Hawley’s Alien series will also be completely separate from Fede Alvarez’s Alien movie, Alien: Romulus. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger was recently quoted saying “The new feature creature from outer space movie is not connected to the FX series that Noah Hawley is behind.”

The Alien franchise is taking a dramatic turn at 20th Century Studios, now owned by Disney. Currently there are two major Alien projects in development – a new Alien TV series by Noah Hawley and a new, stand-alone Alien movie being directed by Fede Alvarez. Both of which will be taking the franchise in a new direction – moving away from the Alien prequel direction Ridley Scott set out to pursue back in 2012.
