For some years now it has been in my head that I would like to see Jake Bugg perform live. Unfortunately the opportunity has never arisen before, so I was very happy to see that his Your Town Tour included Aberdeen. In fact we were treated to the last night of the tour.

Unusually the format of this show is a short acoustic set by Jake Bugg on his own, an interval, and then Jake comes back on with his electric guitar and what’s advertised as his full band. This turned out to be another guitarist and a drummer, introduced at the end as Jack and Robbo.

This format worked very well, nobody objected to not getting a support band when you felt like you were getting “double Bugg”! Some of his songs work better as nice gentle acoustic songs, warming us up for his more rocky tunes in the second set. This intimate gig was sold out weeks in advance and I do not remember seeing the Lemon Tree so crowded with people. There was a great buzz in the room, with a very specific demographic of young people and then older people. In fact several groups seem to be late teenage children with their parents. I spoke to a mother and son at the end who had been on the front barrier, managed to get a copy of the set list, and just had the biggest grins! Its great when you see music bringing the generations together.

The acoustic set started with Strange Creatures and went through some new and old songs including Me and You, Country Song, Hold Tight and ending with Simple As This. The main set was just over an hour long, starting with Trouble Town, Messed Up Kids and going through songs including Pine Trees, All Kinds of People and Two Fingers. It finished with All I Need, and some very heart felt thanks for our participation. We had been invited to sing along to Broken, and goodness me, the emotion (and volume) in the room! We nearly took the roof off I am sure of it.

Jake Bugg has such unique vocals – and a lovely speaking voice to go with it. I would have happily have stayed for a third set!! So glad I finally got to experience him live – and in such a small venue that we all got to be close to the greatness! If you missed the tour you can still benefit from checking out the new album whichever way you prefer to listen to music, just search for A Modern Day Distraction, then sit back and enjoy! You might not get quite as sweaty as we did bouncing away but your ears should be almost as happy.
