A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson.

As soon as the show started I realised I had reviewed this before, and luckily it is the same glorious show as it had been back in 2022 (previous review https://5d-blog.com/michael-flatleys-lord-of-the-dance-his-majestys-theatre-aberdeen/).

Michael Flatley, with his unique dance moves and absolutely tremendous choreography, truly was the Lord of the Dance. These modern day dancers carry on his legacy in a most fitting way featuring interview snippets and video clips from before he retired from dancing on the big screen at the back of the stage at the beginning of the show.

it’s a lovely story of light versus dark as I interpreted it last time, or maybe nature versus man and technology. It could even be seen as the old fashioned traditional Irish dancing versus the modern new incomer with his wiggly sexiness and fluttering feet. Matt Smith is still the Lord of the Dance with Zoltan Papp as the Dark Lord and Cassidy Ludwig is the cute Little Spirit.

Mere mortals such as myself do have to query how on earth they can make some of the moves that they do. It is obvious from their physiques that they train hard and probably don’t eat as voraciously as some of us! Talking of which before this show my friend and I had dinner at The Terrace upstairs in the theatre. This is not only a lovely environment with gorgeous food and very attentive, but not overbearing, servers; but also means that once you finish your dinner you just have to roll down the stairs into the theatre to see the show. This gives a very stress free evening, just enjoying yourself and the company of whoever you have the joy of going to the theatre with.

Back to the show though! It is subtitled A Lifetime of Standing Ovations and it really is a sight to behold. At the end, video clips show you how Michael Flatley has received standing Innovations around the world, and certainly the HMT audience get to their feet and show their appreciation to the dancers that had done so well. As the lights went off and we were dismayed it was over, the back screen lights up again. There is video footage of Michael Flatley, dancing with himself! In fact there are three of them doing a coordinated dance, each taking a turn to show off their dexterous feet. We all sat enthralled at what we were seeing. At the end the video received as much applause as the actual dancers, who then came back on to remind you that things move on and they are the Lord and Ladies of the dance now.

Also starring in the show are Giada Costenaro Cunningham and Helena Gullan playing the fiddle (and dancing a little too!). Last but definitely not least, there is Erin the Goddess, the amazing vocals of Celyn Cartwright who sweeps in wearing stunning gowns and sings her heart out. As before I loved hearing the Irish Gaelic in Mo Ghile Mear, whilst Carrickfergus brought me close to tears.

My friend had never seen the show before and was delighted to have had the opportunity. I have seen it before but was so thrilled to enjoy it again. Even once you know what was going to happen on the storyline you still have all the fancy footwork and amazing costumes to swoon over. Definitely not one that you should miss, even if you have seen it before!
