For other uses, see Faer.
Be with me for the rest of your life.
That sounds like a threat.
Death isn’t what I want from you
―Marda Ro and Velya Faer[2]

Velya Faer was a male Evereni born by around 397 BBY, who lived during the High Republic Era. At some point no earlier than 379 BBY, Velya and his twin sister Vika stopped at a space dock orbiting the gas giant Siquay to refuel their ship and were tracked down by the Evereni pirate leader Marda Ro who searched for others of her species. Ro sent the Faer siblings an invitation, and they were taken to the throne hall of Ro’s starship, the Gaze Electric, by her raiders Esstrop and Kortanio.

Ro greeted Vika and Velya and asked them to join her for food. The siblings stayed aboard the Gaze for several days. During a feast, Ro’s assistant Alirya attempted to kill Faer’s sister but perished at Vika’s hand during the attempt, which caused Ro to shoot Vika with a blaster. Faer was shaken by his sister’s death, but ultimately accepted Ro’s offer to take Alirya’s former spot by her side and joined her. Ro later mentioned Faer in recordings she made for her descendants, which her great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to by 252 BBY.

Early life[]

I’ve been with Vika my whole life.
―Velya Faer[2]

Velya Faer was a male Evereni who lived during the High Republic Era.[2] Born by around 397 BBY,[1] he grew up alongside his twin sister Vika.[2] By a point no earlier than 379 BBY,[3] the two had a ship and Faer had met Evereni named Rad and Espri.[2]

Meeting Marda Ro[]

Be my guests for a while. I’ve been looking for you.
―Marda Ro, to Vika and Velya Faer[2]

At some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[3] Faer and his sister stopped at a space dock orbiting the gas giant Siquay in order to refuel. They remained at the dock for some time, giving Marda Ro—the Evereni[2] founder of a group of pirates who would eventually become the Nihil[4]—time to catch up to them.[2] She[5] sent three ships under her command to surround the Faers, who received an invitation from her. Vika and Velya hesitated for a while, but ultimately accepted the offer and Ro’s raiders Esstrop and Kortanio escorted them to the throne hall of Ro’s ship, the Gaze Electric. Ro greeted them and during the subsequent interaction Vika introduced herself and Faer.[2]

The Faers then joined her for food—prepared by Ro’s assistant Alirya—and told her about their family and other Evereni, as Ro had grown up in isolation from the Evereni’s culture. While Velya ate and talked with his sister and Ro, Alirya brought liquor for the three of them, but none drank it. Once they finished eating, Ro offered them to spar and Faer offered to mediate the fight as Vika wanted to go first.[2]

He watched the two Evereni women fight for a while, but eventually stepped in and stopped the fight. Alirya immediately started attending to a cut on Ro’s arm that she’d suffered during the fight, and ignored requests by Vika and her brother to bring them the liquor from earlier until Ro instructed her to leave her alone. While Alirya went to get the liquor, Vika commented that she was a sweet pet, and Ro corrected her that Alirya is a valuable person and as important as she makes herself.[2]

Vika Faer’s death[]

Alirya wanted to stay at me side. She saw your sister pushing beside me.
Is that how—how it works around here?
There is space at my side now. For one.
―Marda Ro and Velya Faer discuss deaths of Alirya and Vika Faer[2]
GazeElectricpaths

Faer and Vika stayed on the Gaze for the next few days, and while his sister wandered around the ship Faer bounced back and forth between her and Ro. When Ro’s marauders went out to raid, Faer and Vika accompanied them and returned with generous bounty. The Faers—like Ro’s raiders—made offerings to Ro and teased both her and each other. Ro teased the twins back, saying that it was the price of staying on the Gaze. After everyone returned safely from the raid, a feast in which everyone on board participated was thrown in the throne hall in honor of the occasion and Faer ate at the table closest to Ro’s throne.[2]

During the celebration Vika walked over to Ro and while the Evereni women chatted, Alirya sneaked up on Vika from behind and stabbed her with a dagger. Vika survived the attack and retaliated by digging her claws into Alirya’s neck, killing her. Faer rushed to his sister and inspected her wound, while Ro took out a blaster from a hidden compartment in her throne and shot Vika. Faer immediately turned to Ro, who aimed the blaster at him. She explained to Faer that Alirya tried to kill Vika because she felt her position was threatened by her and offered Faer the place that has been left vacant with Alirya’s death. Faer was unsure, but ultimately Ro convinced him to take the place by her side. She offered him her hand and Faer took it, grasping her wrist. The two Evereni dug their claws into each other’s wrist and stood in the throne hall, letting their blood slowly drip onto the floor.[2]

By Ro’s side and legacy[]

You are gathering people to you. You hunt like a ginntho at the center of a web.
Is that what it looks like to you? A web?
What else could it be?
The planet at the heart of a storm.
―Velya Faer and Marda Ro[2]
MarchionRo-THR-NihilPoster

Marchion Ro (pictured) learned of Velya Faer through the journal.

Later Ro and Faer were left alone in the throne hall, bodies and raiders all gone. Curious about how Evereni treat their dead, Ro asked Faer, who explained that they remember the name, as the body is worthless. They sat at a table and drank tea, discussing how many Evereni they had met, with Faer confessing he had met six Evereni other than Ro. She mentioned an Evereni she had met who refused to tell her his name. Ro recalled that he told her Evereni only meet in death and Faer explained that they also meet in the Rystan system, after which Ro finished her tea and studied Faer’s face. He told Ro that she is different from any Evereni he had met, and compared her gathering people to her to a ginntho creature at the center of a web.[2]

Later, Ro recounter how she met Faer and his sister in messages she recorded for her descendants.[2] By 252 BBY,[6] during his youth, Ro’s great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her journal, including the entries where Velya Faer was mentioned.[5] In 228 BBY,[7] while listening to the journal again, Ro remembered that the journal’s contents chronicled his great-great-grandmother’s hunt for Evereni, including Faer.[5]

Personality and traits[]

Before I finished speaking, I attacked. Vika and Velya both laughed, exhilarated.
―Marda Ro, in her journal[2]

Faer bore a strong resemblance to his twin sister Vika. The two had a similar face and sleek and predatory gait. He deeply cared about his sister, being worried when she was stabbed and furious when Ro shot her. Despite this, once she was dead, Faer considered Vika’s body worthless in accordance with Evereni culture, in which the dead were honored by remembering their name. He found combat fun, feeling exhilarated while watching his sister fight Ro. Faer was considered beautiful Ro and—according to Vika—he also considered Ro beautiful. Faer had black eyes, short dark eyelashes, and cold skin.[2]

Equipment[]

Their clothing was complementary gray and red. Soft-soled boots let them walk quietly, while my raiders stomped.
―Marda Ro, in her journall[2]

Faer wore complementary gray and red clothes and had soft-soled boots that allowed him to walk quietly. He and his sister owned a ship.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

I knew that I needed an Evereni who rejects [Marda Ro], and I needed an Evereni that sort of embraces her, or at least, you know, agrees to hang out for a while. And on a totally like practical level, I knew I needed to be like ‘oh well, you know, Marda’s gonna have some babies.’
―Tessa Gratton, discussing inclusion of Velya Faer and other Evereni in “A Closed Fist Has No Claws”[4]

Tessa Gratton, Velya Faer’s creator

Velya Faer appeared in a flashback in the short story “A Closed Fist Has No Claws,” written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[2] In an interview, Gratton mentioned that[4] she[8] knew he needed the story to include an Evereni who rejects Marda Ro and one who embraces her,[4] the former of which ended up being Isren, while the latter one ended up being Faer.[2]

They added that she also realized that Ro needs to have children, which was another factor that played a role in inclusion of Faer in the story. Gratton’s initial plan was to only have Ro meet two Evereni, but he realized while building the story that it would be more dynamic to include a pair of Evereni similar to one Ro herself had with her cousin Yana Ro. This led Gratton to create Faer’s sister Vika, which they described as a complicated process.[4]

At some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[2] Faer and her brother stopped at a space dock orbiting the gas giant Siquay to refuel their ship. The two Faers spent some time at the dock, giving Marda Ro—the Evereni[3] founder of a group of pirates who would eventually become the Nihil[4]—time to catch up to them in[3] her[5] search for others of her species. Ro sent three ships in her service to intercept the Faers, who she sent an invitation to meet her.[3]

Hesitant at first, ultimately the twins reluctantly accepted the invitation. Vika and Velya were taken to the Gaze Electric, Ro’s ship, and taken to its throne hall by the raiders Esstrop and Kortanio. Ro greeted the Faers and they conversed shortly, Vika revealing her and Velya’s names to Ro during the interaction and telling Ro that their grandmother was familiar with the Ros.[3]

Meeting Marda Ro[]

Your pet is sweet.
Alirya is not a pet. She is a part of my crew, and as important as she makes herself.
―Vika Faer and Marda Ro talking about Alirya[3]

They joined Ro for food prepared by her human assistant Alirya and—as Ro grew up isolated from her species’ culture—the Faers told her about their family and other Evereni. Alirya also brought the three Evereni liquor, but none of them drank it. Once they finished eating, Faer and Velya were challenged by Ro to a spar. Faer requested to go first and her brother offered to mediate the friendly fight. While Ro drew her staves, Faer unsheathed her knife and questioned Ro’s weapons of choice. Ro replied and quickly attacked Faer, who swiftly disarmed her of one of the staves and slashed her arm open with her claws.[3]

The Evereni women continued to fight and Ro tossed Faer over her shoulder, immediately getting on top of her to press her other stave against Faer’s throat. Faer managed to escape from the lock by dislodging Ro, after which Velya stepped in to stop the fight. Faer and Ro exchanged smiles, upon which Alirya rushed to Ro to attend to the wound she had suffered during the spar. Faer asked Alirya to bring the liquor from earlier, however Alirya ignored both Faer and her brother until Ro convinced her she was well. While Alirya was bringing them the liquor, Faer commented that she was a sweet pet, and Ro countered by explaining that Alirya is important and as valuable as she makes herself.[3]

Death[]

MardaRo-PathOfDeceit

Faer and her brother stayed aboard the Gaze Electric for several days and while her brother bounced back and forth between her and Ro, Faer explored every part of the Gaze. When Ro’s pirates went out on a raid, the Evereni twins accompanied them and returned with plentiful spoils. Like Ro’s raiders, they made offerings to her while teasing each other and her about it, with Ro teasing them back that it is the price for eating and sleeping on the Gaze. Following the raid, a feast was thrown in the throne hall in commemoration of everyone returning safely.[3]

During the event, Faer moved a chair next to Ro’s throne and brought the pirate leader a small plate of finger cakes. Faer told Ro that her brother thinks Ro is beautiful, and the two talked while Ro nibbled on a finger cake. Unbeknownst to either of them, Alirya snuck up on Faer while they were talking and Faer was stabbed from behind with a dagger by Alirya.[3]

The human backed away with the dagger covered in blood and Faer swiftly grabbed her neck and wrist. She stood to her full height, lifting Alirya off the floor, and broke her wrist while she kicked at Faer. She dug her claws into the human’s throat and dropped her dead body onto the floor. During the subsequent chaos, Faer’s brother rushed to her to inspect her wound, while Ro—shocked by Alirya’s death—took out a blaster from a hidden compartment in her throne and shot Faer in her chest.[3]

Legacy[]

Remember the name. The body is nothing once it is dead. It is food, or rot, or waste.
―Velya Faer, regarding his dead sister[3]

Velya was enraged at Ro for murdering Faer. She explained to him that Alirya tried to murder Faer because she felt the Evereni threatened her position and she wanted to eliminate competition, and also offered him Alirya’s newly vacant place by Ro’s side. While hesitant due to Faer’s death, her brother ultimately accepted the position. Faer’s body was subsequently removed soon after, and—because of her death—Ro questioned Faer’s brother about Evereni traditions regarding the dead. He explained to her that the name should be remembered, bodies of dead Evereni are worthless.[3]

Later, Ro talked about Faer and her death in a message she recorded for her descendants.[3] By 252 BBY,[6] during his youth, Ro’s great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her journal, including the entries where Faer was mentioned.[5] In 228 BBY,[7] while listening to the journal again, Ro remembered that the journal’s contents chronicled his great-great-grandmother’s hunt for Evereni, including Faer.[5]

Personality and traits[]

Your pet is sweet.
―Vika Faer to Marda Ro, regarding Alirya[3]

As an Evereni, Faer had black eyes and gray skin. She had a scalloped ear that had barbed metal woven through it and wild hair long enough to conceal the ear. Her face resembled that of her brother, and she also shared her sleek and predatory stride with him. Faer enjoyed fighting, feeling exhilarated during a fight. She was condescending towards Alirya, calling her a pet, and she was also considered beautiful by Ro.[3]

Skills and abilities[]

Vika disarmed me of one stave, and I flexed my freed razor-sharp nails. I feinted and grabbed her wrist. I squeezed. She twisted her arm and slashed mine open.
―Marda Ro, in her journal[3]

Faer was an experienced fighter, capable of persisting against Ro while sparring and even injuring the Evereni woman.[3]

Equipment[]

Vika wrapped her hair into a knot at the nape of her neck, then slipped a long knife from a sheath on her thigh.
―Marda Ro, in her journal[3]

Faer wore complementary gray and red clothing which camouflaged blood, and soft-soled boots that enabled her to walk quietly. She also carried a long knife in a sheath on her thigh and her brother and her owned a starship.[3]

―Tessa Gratton, discussing reasons for Vika Faer’s creation[4]

Tessa Gratton, Vika Faer’s creator

Vika Faer appeared in flashbacks in the short story “A Closed Fist Has No Claws,” written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[3] In an interview, Gratton mentioned that[4] he[8] knew they needed one Evereni who rejects Marda Ro and a second one who would accept her.[4] Those ended up becoming the elder Evereni Isren and Faer’s brother Velya respectively,[3] but while the initial plan was to have only those two, Gratton later realized that the story would benefit from having two Evereni with a dynamic similar to that of Ro and her cousin Yana Ro, which led to Faer’s conception.[4]

In addition to wanting the dynamic, Gratton said she also wanted to have a scene in the short story where Ro shoots somebody in the chest, because the character usually opts to use claws instead. Coming up with Faer’s was a complicated process according to Gratton, because there was a lot of pieces that he needed to rearrange in order to make Faer’s death feel like a climatic moment of the story. They wanted the scene to be violent and after receiving a note asking if it would be possible to make the scene more brutal on the first submited draft, she was delighted at the request.[4]

Description[]

[Faer] means ‘to know.’
―Marda Ro, in her journal[1]

The Faers were a family of Evereni whose name meant “to know” in the Evereni’s language, as the species named its families for actions. They owned at least two ships. One ship housed several of the family’s members[1] by some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[2] and the other ship belonged to the twins Vika and Velya Faer.[1]

―Marda Ro, to Vika and Velya Faer[1]
GazeElectricpaths

The Faers were active during the High Republic Era with a female member of the family having become acquainted with the Ro family of Evereni and maintaining a list of Evereni names going back to[1] at least 500 BBY[3] by some point no earlier than 379 BBY. By that point,[2] they had at least two grandchildren, the siblings Vika and Velya Faer, who had grown up together. While most of the other six Faers living at that time lived on one ship together, Vika and Velya had their own ship.[1]

At that time,[2] the Evereni siblings stopped at a space dock orbiting the gas giant Siquay to refuel their ship. At the dock, they were intercepted by Marda Ro—the Evereni[1] founder of a group of pirates who would eventually become the Nihil[4]—during her[5] search for other Evereni. The two Faers accepted her invitation and met with Ro in the throne hall of her ship, the Gaze Electric. Ro had grown up isolated from her people, so the siblings told her more about the Evereni and also about their own family over food that Ro’s assistant Alirya had prepared. Later, Vika sparred with the pirate leader while Velya mediated the fight.[1]

The siblings stayed with Ro for the next several days and accompanied her pirates on a raid. To commemorate that all raiders had returned, a feast was thrown in the throne hall of the Gaze. During the feast, Vika walked over to Ro’s throne with a plate of finger cakes, but while the two Evereni talked Alirya snuck up on Faer from behind and stabbed her with a dagger. Faer reacted by swiftly breaking Alirya’s wrist and digging her claws into the human‘s neck, killing Alirya. While Velya hurried to Vika to see whether she was all right, Ro shot her with a blaster as retaliation for murdering Alirya. Initially enraged at his sister’s death, Velya was calmed down by Ro, who ultimately convinced him to stay with her and claim Alirya’s former position by Ro’s side. Faer and Ro stayed in the throne hall and talked, discussing Evereni and how Ro is distinct from other Evereni due to surrounding herself by other beings.[1]

Later, Ro discussed her encounter with the Faers in a recording she made for her descendants.[1] By 252 BBY,[6] during his youth, Ro’s great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her journal, including the entries where Faers were mentioned.[5] In 228 BBY,[7] while listening to the journal again, Ro remembered that the journal’s contents chronicled his great-great-grandmother’s hunt for Evereni, including the Faer twins.[5]
