Getting Ready
To prep, I printed the STEM challenge cards (below) and laminated them to make the cards reusable and extra durable.
Since my kids are notorious for misplacing cards in sets, I punched a hole in the bottom right-hand corner of each one and hooked them together with a binder ring to ensure that they’d stay together.
I grabbed our scale (we got this one from Amazon) and the objects they’d be weighing:
- 3 crayons
- 2 pencils
- 1 pair of scissors
- 2 pink erasers
- 5 Unifix cubes
- 2 markers
- 2 counting bears
- 5 coins (we used pennies but any coin would work)
- 5 paper clips
- 1 pencil
- 2 dice
Solving the STEM Challenges
With all of our supplies ready to go, I invited Middle Brother (age 5) and Little Sister (age 3) to start working their way through the stack of STEM challenges.
Middle Brother (age 5) took the lead and started solving the first few cards on his own while Little Sister watched.
He placed one set of objects on the left side of the scale and the second group on the right.
Then, he eagerly watched the scale tip.
The side that fell to the table was heavier and weighed more. He used a dry erase marker to circle the correct answer on each card.
A few cards into the challenge, Little Sister was ready to jump in and try it, too!
With help from the picture clues, Middle Brother read each STEM challenge card out loud to her and then she started loading the scale.
The motivating, hands-on activity was a huge hit!
